Cropping Movies To Fit The TV Screen: A Movie Buff’s Perspective

A little over a year ago, after completing a screenplay and pitching it on VPF, I got a fairly big production company to read it. As you can imagine, I was quite happy, I even posted about it on Facebook. Not a good idea. It took them almost a year to decide they didn’t want to make it. Although the didn’t say it, I suspect it had something to do with a certain colossal bomb starring Johnny Depp that came out this past Easter.

It was certainly disappointing. But there were reasons to look on the bright side. Most of their movies actually have a made for cable quality to them as opposed to cinematic. Also, they have a distribution deal with Warner Bros. Why is this bad you ask? Because WB loves to crop movies shot in the aspect ratio of 1.85:1, as well as IMAX. to 1.78:1(16:9). And…
